Matt Alford Bear Hunting 2018

This is a photo from our 2018 bear hunt in eastern Oregon.  I’m sunburned and exhausted, having fought off a bought of shingles a week before the hunt and I didn’t know it then, but I was coming down with mononucleosis.  I was tired before we started the trip and I went anyway.  I’m not saying that a hunt like this is a good idea with marginal health, but I waited all year for this trip and I wasn’t about to call it off. The hike in was rough and the days got tougher from there.  Hailstorms, pouring rain, burning sun, we put up our tent on top of an anthill and found our tent completely ransacked by ants two days in row; our packgoats ran off and left us just when a storm was rolling in and we were packing out a bear.   Backcountry hunting is rough on hunters and hell on gear.  When I’m not hunting, I’m thinking about it and designing gear for people who love the outdoors.  I hope some of my ideas make your life a little better.  Now if I could only remember to stop putting the tent on top of ants…

Goats

Butter, the black and white goat in front with the tiny ears, is the leader of this mob of mayhem.  When they’re not chewing on the barn and breaking the fence, they pack our camp in and meat out.  They also try to steal, chew, stomp, and destroy any gear we give them access to.  If they can’t break it, we know it’s ready for the trail.
